The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office has unveiled a new fleet of patrol units that not only sport bold designs and bright graphics but also incorporate a fresh, tech-savvy feature: QR code generator technology. These QR codes are designed to connect residents directly to the department's website, providing an easy way for the community to engage with the office.
Bridging the Community Connection
This innovative step is part of a broader effort by the Sheriff's Office to make its operations more visible and accessible to residents. By scanning the QR codes, community members can instantly access information about various sheriff's programs and even apply to become a deputy. Sheriff Rocky Holcomb emphasized the initiative's role in fostering a closer connection with the community.
"One key aspect we're focusing on is transparency. The QR codes on our patrol cars allow anyone to easily connect with us, whether they're in a parking lot or at a community event," Sheriff Holcomb noted.
Safety First
While the office is enthusiastic about the potential of this technology, it also stresses the importance of using it safely. Sheriff Holcomb advised residents to only scan QR codes when it is safe to do so, such as when the vehicles are stationary at local events.
A Priority on Recruitment
Recruitment remains a top priority for the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office. The recent graduation of Basic Academy Class 59, which saw 20 new deputies complete their training, reflects the office's commitment to growing its ranks. Impressively, 40% of these new recruits were military veterans, and several held college degrees, indicating a trend toward attracting experienced and highly educated individuals.
The office currently employs over 360 sworn deputies and has seen a steady increase in recruitment since 2022. For new deputies, the starting salary is approximately $54,700, which rises to more than $57,000 after graduating from the academy. Moreover, hiring bonuses are available for both new recruits and those transferring from other departments.
Community Engagement
The presence of these visually striking cars in the community serves a dual purpose: boosting recruitment and reinforcing the office's readiness to serve and assist. "When our vehicles are out there, it sends a clear signal that the Sheriff's Office is present and ready to support the community in any way we can," Sheriff Holcomb explained.

In addition to increasing overall recruitment numbers, the Sheriff's Office is committed to fostering diversity within its ranks. As part of the "30x30 Initiative," the office is actively working to recruit more female deputies, aiming to better reflect the demographics of the community it serves.
Feedback from the community has been positive, with many appreciating the new look and functionality of the patrol units. Sheriff Holcomb noted, "The response to our new cars has been overwhelmingly supportive, boosting both morale within the department and our connection with the public."
