Suica and Pasmo, two popular electronic money systems in Japan, are widely used for convenient travel on trains and buses, as well as for quick purchases at convenience stores. In an effort to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving payment landscape, East Japan Railway (JR East) has announced that these systems will soon share a unified payment platform.
Introducing the New System
JR East plans to launch its own QR code generator system, dubbed "teppay," in the autumn of next year. This move is part of JR East's strategy to enhance its payment services and better compete with those offered by prominent tech companies. Currently, Suica is managed by JR East, while Pasmo operates under a consortium of transit services. This collaboration aims to provide a seamless experience for users by integrating the systems.
Enhanced Account Limits
One of the significant changes accompanying the introduction of the new QR-code payment system is an increase in the maximum account balance limit. Currently, users can top up their Suica and Pasmo accounts to a limit of 20,000 yen, which is approximately 130 US dollars. With the launch of the new system, this cap will be significantly raised to 300,000 yen, or about 1,900 dollars, allowing for greater flexibility and convenience.
Future Connectivity and User Benefits
The shared QR-code system is set to go live in the spring of 2027. Once operational, users will have the ability to transfer their balances seamlessly between Suica and Pasmo accounts. This integration not only simplifies the user experience but also provides a more versatile and user-friendly cashless transaction option.

The move to integrate Suica and Pasmo with a shared QR-code system comes as cashless payments continue to gain traction in Japan. Last year, purchases using transit systems like Suica and Pasmo made up 4.4 percent of all cashless payments in the country. Meanwhile, QR-code payments had surged to 9.6 percent, highlighting the growing preference for this method among consumers.

With a combined user base of 35 million individuals who utilize the mobile apps of Suica and Pasmo, the operators of these systems are keen to leverage the benefits of the tie-up. By aligning with the QR-code payment trend, Suica and Pasmo aim to strengthen their position against QR-code systems managed by significant tech giants.
