Owen Sound Introduces Weatherproof Garbage Bag Tags with QR Codes
Owen Sound residents are set to experience a change in how household garbage is managed, with the city rolling out new square-shaped garbage bag tags. These tags feature a QR code generator and are constructed from upgraded materials designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
Enhanced Design for Better Functionality
The new garbage bag tags have been crafted to endure a wide range of temperatures, with a minimum application threshold of -29°C and a service range between -54°C and 94°C. The updated design aims to enhance visibility for collection contractors and makes it easier for residents to access essential waste management information through scannable technology.
The embedded QR code links users to online resources where they can access garbage pickup schedules and find disposal tips, streamlining the process for household waste management.
No Price Change Despite New Features
Despite the redesign, the cost of each garbage bag tag will remain at $3.00. The transition to the new square tags will be gradual, as they will start appearing in retail outlets once the existing stock runs out. Both the old strip-shaped version and the new square design will be accepted during this transition period.
Background on the Fee Schedule
The unveiling of these upgraded tags comes after a thorough review of the city's 2025 fee schedule. A previous council vote held on May 26 resulted in the decision to raise the price per tag from $2.50 to $3.00. This change was met with consensus following earlier proposals for a fee increase in January 2024, which did not pass.
Guidelines for Effective Use
Residents are reminded that each garbage bag left at the curb requires a visible tag for collection. These tags are available at numerous vendor locations, as detailed on Owen Sound's official website. Proper attachment of the tag directly to the garbage bag ensures it meets city collection requirements. The absence of a visible tag on a bag will result in non-collection.
For those participating in the city’s green bin program, continued use is encouraged as it helps reduce overall waste and the need for as many garbage bag tags. Additionally, using the Recycle Coach app can provide guidance on the correct disposal methods for various materials, further aiding in effective waste management.
This initiative reflects Owen Sound’s commitment to improving service efficiency while simplifying the waste disposal process for its residents.
