New QR Code Payment Method for Taipei and New Taipei Transit Systems

The bustling cities of Taipei and New Taipei are about to make commuting easier with the introduction of QR code payments on city buses and the Taipei MRT. Starting this Saturday, passengers can use this convenient payment option through five different electronic payment providers, as announced by the Taipei Department of Transportation.

This new feature, known as the "transportation QR code," can be accessed via apps such as EasyWallet, iPass Money, iCash Pay, Jkopay, or PXPay Plus. To use it, passengers need to open their chosen app, select the transportation code instead of the usual payment code, unlock it, and then scan it at the ticket readers or gates, explained Liu Kuo-chu, Director-General of the General Planning Division.

How to Use the QR Code Payment System

Using the QR code for payment is straightforward. Once a passenger scans the code at the entry point, they should move through the gate immediately after the ticket reader confirms a successful scan and the fare deduction. This helps maintain a smooth flow of passengers and prevents delays due to waiting for confirmation on the app.

Passengers are required to scan the code both when boarding and alighting from buses, as well as when entering and exiting MRT stations. This process mirrors the existing method used with transit cards.

Transfer Discounts and Payment Restrictions

While the QR code system brings a new level of convenience, it's important to note that transfer discounts are available exclusively for users of EasyWallet, iPass Money, and iCash Pay. Currently, buses do not accept payments via credit cards or mobile wallet services like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. However, the MRT plans to incorporate these payment methods by July, following a trial period.

Maintaining Current Systems and Offering Incentives

Despite the introduction of QR code payments, the existing transit card system, which includes EasyCard, iPass, and iCash cards, remains unchanged. Users of the QR code system are also eligible for the same MRT loyalty rebates. These rebates will be credited to the user's payment account by the fifth of the following month. It's worth noting that rides paid for with different providers or accounts cannot be combined for rebate calculation.

To further enhance the convenience of this system, Taipei is actively inviting other payment providers like Line Pay to join. This expansion would allow commuters to access major public transportation services across Taipei and New Taipei City using just their mobile phones.

The Future of Public Transportation Payments

The adoption of QR code payment systems represents a significant step towards modernizing the public transportation network in Taipei and New Taipei City. It not only adds convenience but also positions the cities at the forefront of smart city initiatives. By integrating more payment providers and expanding payment options, the authorities aim to provide a seamless and efficient travel experience for all commuters.

As this new system rolls out, passengers can enjoy a more streamlined journey, reducing the need for physical cards and equipping their smartphones as all-in-one travel companions. With the continued expansion of digital payment options, Taipei and New Taipei are setting a new standard for urban transit systems worldwide.
