Beware of Fraudulent QR Codes in Whistler's Parking Lots (Update)
Beware of Fraudulent QR Codes in Whistler's Parking Lots
The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) recently encountered a new scam affecting its parking systems. On December 27, fraudulent QR codes were discovered on parking terminals across various lots, posing a potential risk to unsuspecting users.
Fraud Uncovered in Day and Marketplace Lots
The fake QR codes were found in Whistler Day Lots 1 through 5, Main Street, and the Marketplace parking area. These codes mimicked legitimate PayByPhone payment signs, presumably to facilitate a form of credit card fraud. By the morning of December 28, the fraudulent stickers had been removed by the municipality.
According to RMOW, the deceptive QR codes led users to a counterfeit website designed to collect payments, likely diverting funds to the fraudsters. Parking customers who scanned these QR codes are advised to immediately contact their credit card companies to report any suspicious activity, cancel their cards, and monitor for further fraudulent transactions.
RMOW's Response and Preventative Measures
RMOW clarified that it does not use QR code generator for parking payments. The municipality emphasized its commitment to maintaining a secure public parking system, protecting users' personal and financial information. The PayByPhone service, responsible for collecting parking payments, actively searches and shuts down fraudulent websites to protect users.
The municipality noted that the fake QR codes were likely in place for a brief period. Although no victims have been identified, individuals who believe they paid for parking through these fraudulent means and received a citation can dispute the ticket. Concerns regarding parking QR codes should be reported to privacy@whistler.ca.
RMOW commended its Bylaw Services Department for swiftly identifying the scam and notifying the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which helped protect residents and visitors from further fraud.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Parking Payment Fraud
RMOW reassures the community that their parking system is safe, constantly monitored to prevent fraud, and adheres to the highest industry standards for data protection. Parking payment fraud is a recognized issue that has impacted other municipal systems in British Columbia.
With vigilant monitoring and proactive measures, RMOW aims to ensure the safety and security of its parking services. The municipality's swift response to this incident underscores its dedication to safeguarding user information and thwarting fraudulent activities.
