High-Tech Drug Distribution

The Metropolitan Police Bureau revealed that this illicit network operated across central Bangkok, using a scavenger hunt model that involved QR code stickers. These codes, strategically placed in the Pathumwan, Lumphini, and Yannawa districts, directed purchasers to a Telegram channel, entirely managed by AI, facilitating seamless orders, payments, and drop-offs without direct human intervention.

The operation resembled a start-up business model, heavily relying on automation to minimize detection risks. The AI handled the transactions in cryptocurrency, ensuring anonymity and efficiency. Upon payment confirmation, it provided buyers with exact coordinates and images of the hidden drug locations, adding an adventurous twist to the distribution process.

Arrests and Seizures

Police identified the two arrested suspects as Ivan, 34, detained at a hotel in Din Daeng, and Mark, 35, apprehended in Watthana. Ivan faced charges of promoting illegal narcotics and possessing Category 5 drugs, including cannabis derivatives. Mark was charged with similar offenses and overstaying his visa.

Authorities seized significant evidence, including cash, electronic devices, and a fleet of mobile phones. They also confiscated a gray Toyota Granvia van and various cannabis products, suggesting the scale and sophistication of their operations.

The investigation began in mid-November after an alert about QR codes offering drugs in Russian appeared on social media. These codes revealed promotional content for substances like cocaine, ketamine, and methamphetamine. Police traced the network using their own AI tools and discovered the intricate system that connected buyers with drug stash points.

The network also encouraged buyer participation as "partners," offering incentives for referrals and courier services. An API was even available for tech-savvy individuals to create their own storefronts, linking to the AI bot and further proliferating the network.

The Capture

In December, the investigation culminated in simultaneous raids to prevent suspects from erasing crucial evidence on their devices. Mark was caught with his Telegram app actively running, while Ivan was found with his laptop connected to the network.

Mark denied involvement in drug trafficking, citing a license to use and sell cannabis legally. He claimed unrelated reasons for carrying suspicious items in his vehicle. Ivan, on the other hand, denied all allegations but acknowledged a previous meeting with Mark.
